Last Tuesday (October 22nd), an article written by van Heest directly addressed our institution, Amsterdam University College, and referred explicitly to certain issues that require elucidation on our behalf. We firmly believe that van Heest’s piece misportrays AUC as an educational institution and its reality at the moment. As one of our fellow students, Luuk, already elaborated on the article in such a comprehensive way we feel like there is little we need to add.
Overall, we consider it a lack of respect towards AUC and its students to claim that there is no critical thinking in our institution. As a matter of fact, we do acknowledge that from a student perspective there is plenty of room for improvement: a lecture-free week in fall, curriculum changes, additional counselling, et alia. We do agree as well that AUC’s full potential is yet to be reached; however, together with the management we are working on changing these aspects for the better, as other students before us. We do not believe that such an article, as written by van Heest, contributes towards this goal and that the tone these concerns are expressed in is rather disproportioned. It undermines the value of our institution and its strive for excellence. On top of this, the article shows a serious lack of respect towards the faculty that dedicates significant effort and time on a daily basis to improve our institution as well as towards a student body that constantly seeks to surpass what is indeed expected from them.
The critique of the security situation at the dorms towards AUC is indeed out of place, considering that the supervision of the dorms relies mostly on DUWO. A clear example of how this issue is misrepresented is the referral to the “noise demonstration” carried out last week, which had little, if any support from the students and ironically, any noise. Regarding the security situation, this year in particular several adjustments were made, such as the inclusion of so called resident assistants, aiming to improve the conviviality at the dorms and with our neighbours. While still having its flaws, we do recognize that it is a step forward towards a better sense of community
Overall AUC students do dare to complain and for us it is not about maintaining a fake aura of excellence, but actually striving for it.

Mijn adagium bij het schrijven van columns voor Folia is: er hoeft niet naar mijn kritiek geluisterd te worden, zolang die maar wel gehoord wordt. Daar ben ik met mijn laatste column in alle bescheidenheid aardig in geslaagd. Heel veel mensen waren het niet met mij eens, anderen wel of gedeeltelijk, maar de discussie is in ieder geval gestart over de gang van zaken binnen het Amsterdam University College. Dat is winst. Ik wil dan ook graag iedereen bedanken die de moeite heeft genomen om te reageren.
Het verwijt dat ik meermalen kreeg was dat ik mijn column niet feitelijk onderbouwd heb. Toch zijn mij meerdere voorbeelden bekend - hetzij doordat ze aan mij verteld zijn, hetzij doordat ze bij Folia per mail binnengekomen zijn - van de situatie bij het AUC, soms op het tragikomische af. Die voorbeelden waren zo specifiek dat ze in de meeste gevallen direct te herleiden waren tot personen. Alles bij elkaar tekende zich het beeld af van een cultuur op het AUC waar tegenspraak niet erg gewaardeerd wordt. Zoals velen ook bij de reacties onder mijn column wilden mijn bronnen niet met naam en toenaam genoemd worden, om mij niet altijd duidelijke redenen. Maar dat er iets niet in de haak was op het AUC werd wel duidelijk, daarom heb ik die column geschreven, in de hoop dat er iets aan die situatie zou veranderen.
Ik begreep dat na het verschijnen van mijn column bij het AUC meteen een crisisteam is ingesteld met als taak uit te zoeken hoe te reageren op deze aantijgingen. De student council is inmiddels ook met een verklaring gekomen, overigens netjes overlegd met de Dean. De Centrale Studentenraad van de UvA heeft zich inmiddels ook tot de student council gewend om te helpen verandering te brengen in deze starre houding van het AUC-bestuur.
Zelf doe ik regelmatig mee met accreditaties van opleidingen, universiteiten en hogescholen. Waar ik dan altijd op hamer is dat er een kwaliteitscultuur moet zijn, waar het vanzelfsprekend is dat er zowel formeel als informeel openlijk en op een gelijkwaardige manier ideeën uitgewisseld kunnen worden tussen bestuur en studenten. En dat er ook iets mee gedaan wordt. Uit de vele reacties, de gesprekken en mails die ik heb gehad is wel duidelijk geworden dat dit vooralsnog onvoldoende het geval is bij het AUC. En dat moet echt veranderen.
