Princess Amalia takes part in the initiation period of the Amsterdamsch Studenten Corps
Will Crown Princess Amalia become a member of the Amsterdamsch Studenten Corps after all, thus keeping up the family tradition of joining a corps? Several corps members say they saw her during the ‘fleurtijd’, the period in which aspirant members get to know the various fraternities.
Crown Princess Amalia a member of the Amsterdamsch Studenten Corps (ASC)? According to several unconfirmed sources from the corps, that is the case, they have told Folia. The Crown Princess was seen by members of several fraternities during the ‘fleurtijd’, the period of the student association where prospective members get to know the different fraternities and sororities.
Several women’s sororities are said to have invited her to become a member of their sororities last weekend. Earlier, other members, who helped with the introduction period, saw her participate in the initiation period of the ASC that takes place annually at a camp near Leusden. That camp took place last week. However, the board of the ASC does not want to comment on her alleged membership. “We cannot make any statements about that”, the senate states.
Amalia already announced in June that she had attended several ‘friendship days’, introduction days of women’s associations, in Amsterdam. “It is also a way for me to make friends in Amsterdam and to participate a little as a normal student”, the Crown Princess told the Telegraaf.
In 2022, Princess Amalia declined membership for ‘personal reasons’. She had previously indicated in her biography written by comedian Claudia de Breij that she would like to join the corps. In 2022, the ASC was under siege when women were referred to as ‘whores’ and ‘sperm buckets’ in a speech.
Madrid
Amalia, who studies PPLE at the UvA, received threats at the end of 2022 and therefore studied in Madrid for a year. She had already returned to Amsterdam earlier.
The royal family has a long tradition of membership in corporal student associations. For example, Amalia’s father King Willem Alexander was a student at LSC Minerva in Leiden and her grandmother Princess Beatrix was a member of the then female version of that Leiden student corps.
The hazing of the Amsterdam corps starts next Wednesday. Next Thursday, the prospective members will be inaugurated, after which they will officially become members of their fraternity or sorority and the overarching ASC.
