Amsterdam-based post-punk band Marathon celebrates the release of their first EP on Thursday 25 May. This will be celebrated grandly with a new edition of Markt Kabaal in Markt Centraal! Besides great food and drinks in the market hall, there are a bunch of other post-punk bands on the menu; HOOFS, Meadowlake and Schwierige Franz. Markt Centraal can only be reached by the little train departing from Jan van Galenstraat 6, it shuttles up and down until midnight to pick you up. Buy tickets at the Markt Centraal website. Missed the train or can't make it on 25 May? No worries, on Thursday 1 June Marathon will also play live at record shop Concerto.
Breaking with your parents in Spui25 | free

A short theatre performance and conversation about a difficult topic that is rather taboo, breaking contact with your parents. Even though one in five Dutch people break contact with one or both parents, people can rarely count on understanding from others. ‘It’s your parents after all,’ people are quick to say. Based on her own experiences with the subject, Stephanie Stumpel made the performance Schone Schijn, with which she wants to break the taboo around the subject. After a shortened screening of her performance, Stumpel will discuss the subject with a psychotherapist and a historian. You can register on the Spui25 website. (Event in Dutch)
The Comedy Embassy at Boom Chicago | €17.50

If you don't feel like ‘just’ having a drink, Boom Chicago is the place to be during ‘the Comedy Embassy’. Expect hilarious stand-up comedy featuring both international and Dutch comedians. World press photo in de Nieuwe Kerk

During the sixty-sixth edition of the world press photo competition, the main venue is here in Amsterdam, in the Nieuwe Kerk. The exhibition presents the best photos that highlight the ‘stories that matter’. These are mostly photos taken for documentaries or journalism. The photos during the exhibition were selected by the jury from over sixty thousand photographs submitted, by almost four thousand photographers. Buy your tickets on the Nieuwe Kerk site.

AMS Unlocked at LIEF Amsterdam | between €28 and €32

Fancy going to a festival with your fellow students? Then AMS Unlocked might be something for you! It’s a festival taking place on 7 June at terrain LIEF Amsterdam in the Westelijk Havengebied. It is organised for and by students, and nearly 2,000 students can attend.
‘Organising a festival on such a large scale for students is really only possible if you join forces,’ Jordy van den Brink (22, European Studies) tells editor Thirza Lont. He is part of study association SES, which co-organises this party.
‘That’s why we came together with study associations AIM, SEFA, JFAS, VSPA and Offscreen to realise this big party. There are two stages at the venue, one inside, and one outside. Outside, EDM music will be played; this is more electric music. But sing-along songs by ABBA, for instance, will also be there. Inside, you can dance to techno music. It starts with slower music, and it gets faster and faster as the day goes on.’
Jordy: ‘Last year, the associations also organised AMS Unlocked. That was during the time when the corona measures were lifted, and such a big party was allowed again. It was so nice to see all the happy faces. That’s also what I look forward to - seeing that feeling of joy in so many fellow students and others who are there that day.’
