Departing dean of the Faculty of Law André Nollkaemper, also a professor of public international law, has been appointed University Professor of International Law and Sustainability. With this appointment, the UvA hopes to accelerate its sustainability agenda.
After serving as dean of the Faculty of Law for seven and a half years, André Nollkaemper (1962) is diving back into academia as UvA’s eighth University Professor as of January 1st, 2024. University Professors are expected to give impetus to scientific developments that transcend traditional disciplines and often conduct interdisciplinary research that benefits the entire academy.
Climate
In his new position, he will focus entirely on research and teaching in international law related to sustainability and bringing together interdisciplinary research at the UvA. His primary focus will be on the systemic transition needed to mitigate climate change, surpassing the planet’s climate threshold, and the contribution of international law to this.
States, international organizations, national and multinational corporations, and consumers worldwide have contributed to climate change, but have been facilitated in doing so by international (public) law. That same law is now indispensable to help solve the climate crisis, which Nollkaemper will help instrumentalize as a University Professor.
Record of service
Nollkaemper has a great track record in international law. Outside of his deanship, he served as an external international law advisor to the State Department. He also served as president of the European Society of International Law, is a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW), and the Institut de Droit International. Since 2022, he has also led the UvA Sustainability Platform.
In addition to André Nollkaemper, the UvA has seven other University Professors. They are Tobias Blanke, Natali Helberger, Ivana Išgum, Rick van der Ploeg, Maarten de Rijke, Patti Valkenburg, and Claes de Vreese. It is not yet known who will succeed Nollkaemper as dean of the Faculty of Law.
